Rural and Remote – Kerala
If you like to get away from the main tourist areas and get off the beaten track then this section is for you. The accommodation listed is not at a ‘destination’ and staying here is more about getting to know the locals. The accommodation in these rustic areas is either small hotels/guesthouses or homestays. Many are working farms or plantations so guests also have the opportunity to learn about food production.
You do not have to go to the highest sections of the Western Ghats to enjoy some mountain scenery and cool air. A visit to the foothills can break-up a long journey. The secluded locations of these properties is superb and they offer a more personal experience.
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is 78 km from Cochin and regarded as the best place in Kerala to see birds. The sanctuary is also known as the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, named after the world-renowned ornithologist (1896-1987) who described Thattekkad as a ‘birder’s paradise’.
Palakkad (Palghat) is an attractive rice growing area in a natural gap in the Western Ghats. Palakkad provides a welcome break in the journey between Cochin and North Kerala or Ooty.
Situated on the Chalakudy River in the Thrissur District, located on the National Highway 544 – 47km north of Cochin and 30km south of Thrissur. So a great base to explore these regions of Kerala and the Anthirapally Waterfall.
