Matheran

Matheran means ‘mother forest’. Up in the Sahyadri range this is Mumbai’s closest hill station and is a pleasant place to escape the hustle and bustle of Mumbai as well as the heat. Vehicles are banned within the town so it is a place where people walk, horse ride or take a hand-pulled rickshaw. Getting there requires a trip on one of India’s hill railways (or by horseback). Matheran has been declared an eco-sensitive region and there is a wide variety of plants and animals in the area.
